Aorta

/eɪˈɔːrtə/ noun

Definition

The largest artery in the human body, arising from the left ventricle of the heart and carrying oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except the lungs. It curves upward, then downward, forming the aortic arch before descending through the chest and abdomen.

Etymology

From Greek 'aorte' meaning 'that which is hung up,' possibly referring to its suspended appearance in the chest cavity. Aristotle first used this term to distinguish it from other blood vessels he observed in dissections.

Kelly Says

Your aorta handles tremendous pressure - about 120 mmHg with every heartbeat - and if it ruptures, you can bleed to death internally in minutes because it carries about 5 liters of blood per minute! An aortic aneurysm is like a weak spot in a garden hose under high pressure, which is why they're so dangerous when they burst.
