Aortic

/eɪˈɔrtɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the aorta, the main artery that carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle of the heart to the rest of the body.

Etymology

From Greek 'aorte,' literally meaning 'that which is hung' or 'suspended,' from 'aeirein' (to lift or suspend). Ancient anatomists named it this way because of how the aorta appears to hang from the heart when the chest is opened.

Kelly Says

The aorta is remarkably engineered - it must handle the explosive force of each heartbeat while maintaining flexibility to absorb pressure waves, which is why aortic problems can be so dangerous. Ancient Greek physicians identified it as crucial despite not understanding circulation, simply by observing its size and central position.
