Describing warning coloration or signals that an animal uses to advertise that it is dangerous, toxic, or tastes bad to predators.
Etymology
From apo- (away) + sematic (relating to meaning or signs), from Greek sema (sign). The term was coined by naturalists to describe how animals use visible signals to warn predators away.

Poison dart frogs are brilliantly colored because they're basically wearing neon signs saying 'don't eat me—I'm poisonous!' and predators actually learn to recognize these colors and avoid them, making aposematic coloring an evolutionary superpower.
