Definition
In medicine, the termination or declining stage of a disease; the turning point after which recovery or death becomes apparent.
Etymology
From Greek 'apostasis' (a standing away, departure), from 'apo-' (away) + 'stasis' (standing). In medical terminology, it refers to when a disease reaches its critical turning point.
Kelly Says
Before modern medicine, doctors watched for 'apostasis'—that dramatic moment when a fever breaks and you know whether the patient will live or die, which was basically all they could do to predict outcomes.
