Definition
The apostrophe punctuation mark itself, or in classical usage, a mark or symbol used in ancient texts to indicate pauses or omissions.
Etymology
From Greek apostrophos (marked with a turning away), from apo- (away) plus strophein (to turn). The term describes both the modern punctuation mark and its classical antecedents.
Kelly Says
That tiny little apostrophe (') is literally called 'apostrophus,' but the word sounds so grand and Latin that it makes a humble punctuation mark feel like ancient royalty!
