Definition
Relating to or characteristic of an apothecary, a storehouse, or the practice of preparing and selling medicinal substances.
Etymology
Derived from Late Latin apothecarius and Greek apotheke (storehouse), with the suffix -al added to create an adjective. The word describes anything connected to apothecaries or their work.
Kelly Says
In the 1600s, apothecal shops were dangerous places—apothecaries worked with poisonous herbs, mercury, and arsenic without modern safety equipment, and many poisoned themselves while preparing medicines!
