Definition
An appraisal is a careful judgment of how valuable, good, or effective something is, such as a house, artwork, or employee’s work.
Etymology
From "appraise," which comes from Old French "apreisier" meaning "to value" or "to set a price." It’s closely related to the idea of putting a price or worth on something.
Kelly Says
Most appraisals feel objective, but they always hide human choices about what counts as “value.” A painting, a performance, or a property can rise or fall in worth just because expectations and fashions shift.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Performance appraisals and evaluations have often reflected gender bias, with women and marginalized genders receiving different feedback tones and criteria than men for similar work. Emotional traits may be overemphasized for women and underemphasized for men.
Inclusive Usage
Use "appraisal" with attention to fairness and consistency, and avoid gendered language in feedback (e.g., "abrasive" for women vs. "assertive" for men). Where possible, base appraisals on observable behaviors and outcomes.
Inclusive Alternatives
["evaluation","assessment","review"]
Empowerment Note
When discussing appraisal systems, include research on gender and racial bias in evaluations and highlight reforms that make criteria clearer and more equitable.
