Appredicate

/əˈpredɪkeɪt/ verb

Definition

To claim or assert something as a property or quality of something else (archaic theological/logical term).

Etymology

From Latin appraedicatus, combining ad- (to) + praedicare (to assert). Related to predicate. This is a highly technical term from medieval logic and theology that never gained common usage in English.

Kelly Says

Medieval monks debated whether properties could be 'appredicated' to God—basically whether you could even use adjectives to describe divinity—which is the linguistic version of a fundamental theological paradox!
