Apteryx

/ˈæptərɪks/ noun

Definition

The kiwi bird, a flightless bird from New Zealand with very small, hidden wings.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' (without) and 'pteryx' (wing), literally meaning 'without wings.' Linnaeus named this genus in 1788 based on the bird's vestigial wing structures that are almost invisible under its feathers.

Kelly Says

Kiwis have wings so tiny they're basically useless, but they evolved that way because New Zealand had no predators for millions of years, so flying wasn't necessary!
