Definition
A fossil plate or structure found in ancient nautiloid cephalopods, thought to have covered the aperture of their shells.
Etymology
From Greek 'a-' (without) and 'ptyche' (fold), literally 'without folds.' Named by paleontologists in the 1800s for these mysterious shell structures.
