Definition
A tiny tree-like branching structure formed by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inside plant root cells, serving as a nutrient exchange point.
Etymology
Latin 'arbusculum,' diminutive of 'arbor' (tree). The term was adopted in mycology specifically to describe the characteristic branched morphology of these fungal structures.
Kelly Says
These microscopic 'trees' inside roots are where one of nature's greatest deals happens—the fungus gets sugars from the plant while the plant gets phosphorus and water that its own roots can't reach. It's ancient biological commerce!
