Definition
A territory or domain ruled by an archduke or archduchess, typically one of supreme or principal importance in a kingdom.
Etymology
From 'arch-' (chief, principal) and 'duchy' (domain of a duke), from Old French 'duche.' This title emerged in the Holy Roman Empire as a way to distinguish the most important ducal territories from ordinary duchies.
Kelly Says
Austria was technically an 'archduchy,' not a kingdom—historians debate why the Habsburgs kept this slightly weird title rather than claiming kingdom status, suggesting medieval titles had political power beyond what we'd expect.
