Arctic

/ˈɑːrktɪk/ or /ˈɑːrtɪk/ adjective

Definition

Arctic describes the very cold regions around the North Pole, or anything related to that area. It can also mean extremely cold in general.

Etymology

From Latin “Arcticus,” from Greek “arktikos” meaning “of the north,” from “arktos” meaning “bear,” referring to the northern constellations the Great Bear and Little Bear.

Kelly Says

The Arctic is literally named after a bear—not the animal, but the star patterns that point north. When people say “arctic cold,” they’re comparing the chill to a place guided by the stars themselves.
