Aretalogy

/ˌærɪˈtɒlədʒi/ noun

Definition

A narrative or account of virtuous deeds and noble accomplishments; also, the philosophical study of virtue and human excellence.

Etymology

From Greek 'arete' (virtue, excellence) + '-logia' (discourse, study). Used in both classical and modern contexts—both for ancient accounts of gods' and heroes' deeds, and for philosophical study of virtue.

Kelly Says

Ancient texts called 'aretologies' basically bragged about how awesome their gods were—it's the original 'greatest hits' marketing, now repurposed as a fancy philosophy term!
