Argus

/ˈɑːɡəs/ noun

Definition

In Greek mythology, a giant with many eyes who served as a watchful guardian; also refers to someone who is extremely vigilant or watchful.

Etymology

From Greek mythology, Argus Panoptes ('all-seeing') was a giant with eyes all over his body who never fully slept. After his death, Hera placed his eyes on the peacock's tail, giving the word metaphorical meaning of constant surveillance.

Kelly Says

The phrase 'argus-eyed' captures the mythological legacy of this many-eyed giant, and modern surveillance systems are sometimes called 'argus networks.' Interestingly, several bird species are named 'argus' due to eye-like patterns on their feathers.
