Definition
A place name, most famously referring to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, the primary military cemetery of the United States. Also the name of various cities and towns across America.
Etymology
From Old English, combining 'earl' (nobleman) with 'ing' (belonging to) and 'ton' (settlement), literally meaning 'settlement of the earl's people'. Many American Arlingtons were named after Arlington House, the Virginia estate.
Kelly Says
Arlington National Cemetery was created on the confiscated estate of Robert E. Lee as a deliberate symbolic gesture - the Union army buried war dead in Lee's front yard to ensure the Confederate general could never return home. This act of wartime spite became America's most sacred burial ground.
