Definition
An armadillo is a small mammal with a hard, bony shell covering its body, found mostly in the Americas. Some types can curl into a ball to protect themselves.
Etymology
From Spanish “armadillo,” meaning “little armored one,” from “armado” meaning “armed” or “armored” plus the diminutive “-illo.” The name points to its shell like armor.
Kelly Says
An armadillo is basically a walking tank the size of a cat. Its name literally calls it a tiny armored soldier, which is exactly how it survives in a world full of teeth and claws.
