Armament

/ˈɑːrməmənt/ noun

Definition

Armament refers to weapons and military equipment used for war, such as guns, tanks, and missiles. It can also mean the process of building up these weapons.

Etymology

From Latin “armamentum” meaning “equipment” or “arms,” from “arma” meaning “weapons.” It originally referred to general equipment, but narrowed to military tools.

Kelly Says

Armament is the hardware of war—the physical proof of how much a country is preparing to fight. Massive armament buildups often signal fear as much as strength, like neighbors piling up locks and alarms because they don’t trust each other.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Military production and armaments industries have been led largely by men, and language around armament has often linked weaponry with masculine ideals of strength and dominance. Women's roles in these sectors, especially in manufacturing, have been underrecognized.

Inclusive Usage

Discuss "armament" in institutional or technical terms rather than associating weaponry with any gender; avoid glorifying violence as a marker of masculinity.

Inclusive Alternatives

["weaponry","military equipment"]

Empowerment Note

When covering wartime production, acknowledge women's labor in armaments factories and their organizing efforts around safety and labor rights.
