A tumor, growth, or abnormal protuberance arising from or affecting a joint area.
Etymology
From arthro- (joint) + -phyma (from Greek phyma, growth or swelling). This term combines the Greek elements for 'joint' and 'outgrowth,' reflecting older medical traditions of naming diseases by their visible manifestations.

In arthritis, you sometimes see bone spurs and nodules form—these are literally 'joint growths,' and doctors recognized them so long ago that they gave them a Greek name, even though X-rays wouldn't exist for another 1,800 years.
