Definition
A person who lives in a region where the sun is directly overhead at noon and casts no shadow at that moment.
Etymology
From Greek 'a-' (without) and 'skia' (shadow), literally meaning 'without shadow.' The term was used by ancient geographers to describe peoples living near the equator.
Kelly Says
Medieval and ancient mapmakers were fascinated by ascians because they thought shadows behaving differently proved the Earth was round—observing shadow lengths at the same time across different latitudes was one of the earliest proofs of Earth's spherical shape!
