Definition
A specialized structure or stalk in certain fungi that bears or carries the ascus (spore sac), supporting the asci during spore development and release.
Etymology
From Greek askos (wineskin, bladder) + -phore (bearing, carrying, from pherein, to carry). The term was developed in mycology to describe the various support structures in fungal fruiting bodies.
Kelly Says
An ascophore is like a microscopic elevator for fungal spores—it positions the asci so perfectly that when they're ripe, spores catapult into the air with incredible force and travel miles on the wind.
