Aseismic

/ˌeɪˈsaɪzmɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to regions, structures, or geological features that do not experience earthquakes or are not affected by seismic waves.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'seisma' (earthquake). This became the standard scientific term for describing earthquake-free zones or slip that occurs without detectable seismic waves.

Kelly Says

Scientists recently discovered that some faults slip 'aseismically'—just quietly gliding without causing earthquakes—which was a huge deal because they thought all major faults had to produce big quakes!
