Definition
Avoiding social interaction; not wanting to spend time with other people; unfriendly or withdrawn.
Etymology
From 'a-' (prefix meaning without or not) plus 'social,' which comes from Latin 'socialis' meaning of companions or fellowship. This prefix 'a-' is the standard modern negating prefix (as in 'atypical'), not the archaic state-indicator 'a-.'
Kelly Says
Interestingly, 'asocial' was probably created following the modern logical pattern of negating words (a-, non-, un-, dis-) rather than as part of the medieval 'a-' tradition—it's a modern word that looks old because its prefix looks old.
