Assesses

/əˈsɛsɪz/ verb

Definition

Judges or evaluates the nature, quality, or importance of something; determines the value of property for tax purposes.

Etymology

From Latin assessus (past participle of assidere: to sit beside, help in judging). Assidere combines as- (to) + sidere (to sit). The word entered English through legal and tax contexts in the medieval period.

Kelly Says

The phrase 'to assess' literally meant to sit beside someone in judgment—the visual image of an older judge with an assessor sitting next to them, whispering advice! This Roman practice became the foundation of modern tax evaluation systems.
