Definition
Relating to or resembling a star; star-shaped or having star-like characteristics; starry.
Etymology
From Greek 'asterikos' derived from 'aster' meaning star, plus the '-ikos' suffix creating an adjective meaning 'pertaining to.' This is an ancient Greek adjective form still used in modern scientific terminology.
Kelly Says
The Greek suffix '-ikos' is where English got '-ic,' so when scientists say 'asterisks' or 'asteroids,' they're literally saying 'star-like things' in a direct line of descent from ancient Greek astronomers naming things they saw in the sky.
