Astronomy

/əˈstrɑːnəmi/ noun

Definition

Astronomy is the scientific study of the sun, moon, stars, planets, and everything else in space.

Etymology

It comes from Greek *astronomia*, from *astron* 'star' and *-nomia* 'arranging, law'. Originally it referred to understanding the laws or order of the stars.

Kelly Says

The idea that stars follow 'laws' was one of humanity’s first big scientific insights: the sky isn’t random, it’s patterned. That realization is what allowed people to predict seasons, navigate oceans, and eventually send machines—and people—into space.
