Ataxia

/əˈtæksiə/ noun

Definition

Loss of coordination and balance due to dysfunction of the cerebellum or sensory pathways. It affects voluntary movements, causing unsteady gait, tremor, and difficulty with fine motor tasks.

Etymology

From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'taxis' (order/arrangement), literally meaning 'without order.' The term was introduced into neurology in the 19th century to describe the characteristic lack of coordination seen in cerebellar disorders.

Kelly Says

Ataxia is like trying to conduct an orchestra where all the musicians are playing at slightly different tempos - the brain knows what movements it wants, but can't coordinate them smoothly! People with ataxia often develop a characteristic wide-based 'drunken sailor' gait and may appear intoxicated even when completely sober, leading to unfortunate misunderstandings.
