Definition
Relating to or characterized by the absence of a thymus gland, or relating to athymia (emotional emptiness).
Etymology
From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'thymos' + '-ic' (adjective suffix). Can refer either to the physical absence of a thymus gland or metaphorically to emotional absence.
Kelly Says
This word straddles biology and psychology—medically it describes people born without a thymus gland (which fights infections), but it also describes an emotional state, showing how ancient Greek medicine saw the body and emotions as interconnected.
