Atoms

/ˈætəmz/ noun

Definition

the smallest units of matter that retain the properties of an element

Etymology

from Greek atomos 'indivisible', from a- 'not' + temnein 'to cut'

Kelly Says

The Greeks named atoms 'uncuttable' because they thought they were the smallest possible pieces of matter. Ironically, we later discovered you can split atoms - and when you do, things get very explosive!
