Attain

/əˈteɪn/ verb

Definition

To attain something is to succeed in reaching it, especially after effort, like attaining a goal, level, or skill.

Etymology

It comes from Old French *attaindre*, from Latin *attingere* 'to touch, to reach', from *ad-* 'to' and *tangere* 'to touch'. The idea is of finally being able to touch what you were aiming at.

Kelly Says

The image of 'touching' your goal is more concrete than just 'getting' it: you move from far away to arm’s length to finally contact. That’s why milestones and ceremonies matter—they mark the moment your dream is no longer distant but literally at hand.
