Atypical

/eɪˈtɪpɪkəl/ adjective

Definition

Not characteristic of a type, group, or class; unusual or not conforming to the standard pattern. Describes something that differs from what is normally expected.

Etymology

Formed from Greek 'a-' (not) plus 'typical,' which comes from 'typos' (impression, model). The prefix 'a-' negates the meaning, creating 'not typical.' This modern formation became common in the 20th century.

Kelly Says

Atypical is like being the one person who orders pizza at a sushi restaurant - you're not following the typical pattern. The 'a-' prefix is like a red flag saying 'this doesn't fit the usual type!'
