Auditions

/ɔːˈdɪʃənz/ noun

Definition

Tryouts where performers demonstrate their abilities to be selected for roles or positions. Tests of skill in acting, singing, or musical performance.

Etymology

From Latin auditionem 'a hearing, listening', from audire 'to hear'. The performance sense developed in theater, where directors literally 'heard' performers to judge their suitability.

Kelly Says

Blind auditions, where judges can't see performers, revolutionized orchestra hiring by eliminating unconscious bias - the number of women in orchestras increased dramatically when gender became invisible. This shows how the 'hearing' in audition can be clouded by what we see.
