Definition
Relating to the age of the Roman Emperor Augustus or to literature and style of that refined, classical period.
Etymology
Derived from 'Augustus' (Latin 'Augustinus'), the first Roman emperor. Lowercase 'augustan' can apply to any refined neoclassical period.
Kelly Says
The Augustan Age of literature (17th-18th century Britain) deliberately imitated Roman refinement—writers like Pope and Swift were basically cosplaying as Latin poets, which is why their work sounds so formal and controlled.
