Definition
The action of listening to sounds from the heart, lungs, or other organs, typically with a stethoscope.
Etymology
From Latin 'auscultare' (to listen carefully). Before stethoscopes, doctors literally pressed their EAR to your chest. René Laënnec invented the stethoscope in 1816 because he was too embarrassed to press his ear to a woman's chest.
Kelly Says
A doctor was too SHY to press his ear to a woman's chest, so he invented the STETHOSCOPE! Before 1816, doctors just... put their ear on you! Embarrassment created one of medicine's greatest tools! 🩺😳
