Definition
A type of natural glass formed by meteorite impacts, found primarily in Australia, Tasmania, and scattered across the Indian Ocean region.
Etymology
From Austral (Australian) plus the mineralogical suffix -ite (indicating a mineral or rock type). Named after the region where it was first identified and is most abundant.

Australites are 'tektites,' glassy objects created when meteorites smash into Earth—the extreme heat fuses soil and rock into glass! They're found in strewn fields across the Indian Ocean, likely from a massive impact roughly 700,000 years ago in Southeast Asia.
