Definition
Economic or political self-sufficiency; the ability of a country or region to be independent by producing all the goods and services it needs without relying on imports from other nations.
Etymology
From Greek autos 'self' + arkein 'to defend, suffice.' Gained prominence in 20th-century economic and political discourse, especially during pre-WWII nationalism.
Kelly Says
Perfect autarky is economically impossible—no country has all resources, climate zones, and expertise—yet the dream keeps attracting politicians because it sounds like independence and strength.
