Autecology

/ˌɔːtɪˈkɒlədʒi/ noun

Definition

The study of how a single species lives and survives in its environment, including what it eats, where it lives, and how it reproduces.

Etymology

From Greek 'autos' (self) + 'oikos' (house/home) + '-logy' (study of). The term emerged in early 20th-century ecology to distinguish the study of individual species from synecology, which studies entire communities.

Kelly Says

While most ecologists study whole ecosystems, autecologists are like species biographers—they follow one organism obsessively to understand every detail of its life, which is why we know so much about salmon migration patterns or how polar bears hunt.
