Authentic

/ɔːˈθentɪk/ adjective

Definition

Authentic means real, genuine, and not copied or fake. It can describe things, like an authentic painting, or behavior, like an authentic smile.

Etymology

From Latin “authenticus,” from Greek “authentikos,” meaning “original” or “genuine,” related to “authentēs,” a person acting on their own authority. Over time it shifted from describing legal originality to emotional and personal realness.

Kelly Says

When we say someone is being authentic, we’re literally saying they are acting from their own authority, not just following the crowd. The word quietly links honesty with independence.
