Definition

The process of a material igniting and burning by itself without an external flame or spark, due to chemical reactions within the material.

Etymology

From auto- (self) + combustion (from Latin combustus). The term emerged in chemistry and materials science to explain spontaneous fires that seemed to start without obvious cause.
