Definition
Plural of autocrat; rulers who have complete power and don't share decision-making with anyone else.
Etymology
From Greek 'autos' (self) + 'kratos' (power/rule). The term literally means 'self-rule' and was used in ancient Greece to describe absolute rulers, later applied to any dictator or tyrant with unrestricted authority.
Kelly Says
Autocrats are fascinating because they often justify their power by claiming they alone can make the 'right' decisions—yet history shows they typically make worse decisions than groups because they lack diverse perspectives and constructive criticism.
