Definition
A cellular process where cells digest their own components by engulfing them in membrane-bound vesicles called autophagosomes, which then fuse with lysosomes for degradation. It serves as a quality control and recycling mechanism.
Etymology
From Greek 'auto' (self) and 'phagy' (eating), literally meaning 'self-eating.' The term was coined by Belgian scientist Christian de Duve in the 1960s, and Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel Prize for elucidating the molecular mechanisms.
