Definition
In cytology and genetics, the pairing of homologous chromosomes derived from the same parent or the spontaneous alignment of sister chromatids during cell division.
Etymology
From 'auto-' (self) plus 'syndesis' (joining together), from Greek 'syn' (together) and 'desis' (binding). The term emerged in early genetics to describe self-pairing chromosome behavior.

During meiosis, chromosomes normally pair with their partner from the other parent, but in autosyndesis, sister copies accidentally pair with each other—it's usually a mistake that leads to infertility or genetic problems.
