Aventine

/ˈævəntaɪn/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the Aventine Hill, one of the seven hills of ancient Rome, or describing something associated with that location.

Etymology

From Latin Aventinus, the name of one of Rome's famous hills. The hill may have been named from avena (oats) or from the Etruscan word for water, though scholars debate its true origin. The name became used to describe the hill and anything connected to it.

Kelly Says

The Aventine Hill was so politically significant that in 494 BCE, the entire working class of Rome literally walked out and camped there to demand better rights—it was ancient history's first major strike! Imagine an entire city's poorest residents just sitting on a hill until the government negotiated with them.
