Axil

/ˈæksɪl/ noun

Definition

The angle formed between a leaf petiole and the stem from which it grows. This small space is where axillary buds typically develop.

Etymology

From Latin 'axilla' meaning 'armpit' or 'small axis.' The term was adopted because the angle between leaf and stem resembles the angle formed by an arm and torso.

Kelly Says

Think of the axil as nature's 'armpit' - and just like human armpits can be sites of growth (hair!), plant axils are where new branches and flowers often emerge. It's the plant's most productive little corner!
