Ayahuasca

/ˌaɪ.ə.ˈwɑːskə/ noun

Definition

A powerful hallucinogenic plant mixture used in shamanic rituals by indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest.

Etymology

From Quechua aya (spirit, deceased person) + huasca (vine or rope). The name literally means 'vine of the spirits' or 'vine of the dead.' It's a brew made from Banisteriopsis caapi vine combined with other plants containing DMT, an extremely potent psychedelic compound.

Kelly Says

Ayahuasca contains DMT, the same chemical your brain might naturally produce during near-death experiences—which has led some neuroscientists to theorize about whether it plays a role in spiritual experiences and dreams.
