Azures

/ˈæʒərz/ noun

Definition

Plural of azure; multiple instances of the color blue, or regions of blue (like sky or sea), or blue pigments.

Etymology

From 'azure' (bright blue, from Persian 'lāžuvard' for lapis lazuli stone) plus the plural suffix '-s.' In heraldry, azures are the blue elements in coats of arms.

Kelly Says

In medieval manuscripts, azures (ultramarine blue sections) were often left blank and filled in last by the most skilled, expensive artists—you can sometimes see unfinished medieval books where the azures are still missing!
