Bacchanal

/ˈbækənəl/ noun

Definition

A wild, drunken party or celebration; a person who participates in riotous revelry.

Etymology

From Latin bacchanalis, from Bacchus (Roman god of wine). Originally referred to festivals honoring Bacchus, but evolved to mean any wild celebration involving drinking and debauchery.

Kelly Says

The Roman Senate actually tried to ban Bacchanal festivals in 186 BCE because they got so out of control—it's one of history's first examples of the government cracking down on wild parties!
