Definition
Plural of backhoe; large excavating machines with a digging bucket on the end of a hydraulic arm that moves toward the operator.
Etymology
'Backhoe' combines 'back' (the bucket moves backward toward the machine) and 'hoe' (a digging tool). Coined in the early 20th century during the mechanization of construction and excavation work.
Kelly Says
The backhoe is basically a hydraulic arm that digs by pulling dirt toward itself—it's why you see them on almost every construction site, doing jobs that would take humans weeks to do.
