Bacteroid

/ˈbæktəroɪd/ adjective

Definition

Resembling a bacterium in form or appearance; bacterium-like.

Etymology

From bacterio- + -oid (resembling). A descriptive scientific term from the late 1800s used to describe structures that look like bacteria but may not be true bacteria.

Kelly Says

Plant nodule bacteroids are modified bacteria living in root nodules—they don't look or act like normal bacteria anymore because they've been so heavily domesticated by their plant partner!
