Definition
An island nation in the Atlantic Ocean consisting of more than 700 islands southeast of Florida.
Etymology
From Spanish 'bajamar' meaning 'shallow sea' or possibly from Taíno 'ba-ha-ma' meaning 'large upper middle land'. Columbus named them 'Baja Mar' referring to the shallow waters surrounding the islands.
Kelly Says
The Bahamas has more blue holes (underwater sinkholes) than anywhere else on Earth, creating an underwater cave system that marine biologists are still exploring. Despite having over 700 islands, only about 30 are inhabited, leaving vast pristine areas for wildlife.
